St. James, North Carolina, is blessed with over 200 ponds, about 70% managed by our Property Owners' Association (POA) and the others by Troon Management, the owner of St James' 81 holes of golf. Many of the golf course ponds are also bordered by homes and those shorelines can be pondscaped by homeowners.

Proper vegetation on pond edges not only adds natural beauty; it reduces erosion and improves water quality, thus supporting our entire wildlife ecosystem of fish, turtles, birds, butterflies—and other interesting critters.

Beginning in 2018, the POA's St James Ponds Committee annually teams with Lumber River Native Plants in Gibson, NC, to sell and deliver over a dozen species chosen for pondscaping in St. James.

ALL CAPS TITLE

Pickerelweed is a plant native to the American continent, growing in wetlands and the edges of ponds and lakes.

Family owned and operated, Lumber River specializes in growing wetland plants from seeds collected from natural habitats in the Carolinas. Many are upland species that require less water, making them more draught resistant, especially in sandy soils.

The pricing is excellent: $3 for 3" pots, with shrubs at $7 for 1-gallon pots. Because these plants are an agricultural product grown from seeds and sold directly from grower to homeowner, there is no retail sales tax. (To be clear, there is also no "retail service.")

Last year, 88 orders for nearly 1900 plants yielded a 68% increase from 2019.
